Embrace the Now!

As I am quickly approaching my birthday I have done some reflection. Over the past few months I have caught myself on numerous occasions saying “I’ll be 35 in April.” In retrospect, my response to how old I am, should have been “I am 34.” Simple as that. By stating what I will be has taken away from what I am now. This applies to all aspects of life. As we go through this amazing journey we typically are already thinking about what’s next. What about appreciating the here and now?

How many of you have been asked:

Are you in college?Life is Not a Race.
Most would answer: “Yes, I am graduating in XXXX.”
How about answering: “Yes! I am a freshman, etc” Embrace the now!

Oh you’re on a diet?
Most would answer: “Yes, I want to lose 20 lbs by xx etc.”
How about answering “Yes, I am working hard.” Embrace the now!

What do you do for work?
Most would answer: “I work in xxxx but am waiting to move into xxxx.”
How about answering “I work in xxxx and it’s a great part of my career path.” Embrace the now!

How old is your son/daughter?
Most would answer: “He’ll be xx in xxxxx.” (I am guilty of this one.)
How about answering: “He’s xx. It’s a fun age!” Embrace the now!

I recently found this quote and think it is important to remember.

“Everyone wants to get to the top of the mountain first & shout, “Look at me! Look at me!” But the truth is, all your happiness & growth occurs while you’re climbing, not while you’re sitting at the top. Enjoy the journey by paying attention to each step. Don’t rush through your life and miss it. Forget where everyone else is in relation to you. This isn’t a race. You get there a little at a time, not all at once.”  –Marc Chernoff

I think you can see where I am going with this. We rarely cherish the moment we are in right now. We need to learn to embrace it. To get where we are going we need to be where we are. There is nothing wrong with where you are at this very moment in time. You are exactly where you need to be!
